What’s a Laverock?

The number one question I have been asked since I set up the business has been a variation of the title of this first blog post.  And no its not what flows out of a volcano.

Settle in for a history, geography and linguistic lesson.

Laverock is the old Scots word for a lark, the bird famous for getting up well before breakfast.

But perhaps of more importance to my story, on the south banks of the Firth of Forth, near Newhaven harbour, in what is now north Edinburgh, the land rises quickly meaning there is a steep bank.  Apparently in the olden days this bank was much favoured by larks, or laverocks, as a place to roost.  So much so that when a Leith merchant built a house in the area in the 18th century he named it Laverockbank House, most likely taking up an older name for the area.

Yeah but what’s this got to do with pensions Ian?

Nothing really.  However it just so happens that a chap who knows quite a bit about pensions and technology lives in the area that is still called Laverockbank.

I could try to make up something about how I am always up early or something but no.  I named the business after where I live and run the company.  As a North Edinburgh boy one of my other passions is local history and geography.

Wait till I tell you about how Goldenacre got its name…

Next time I will write about pensions and stuff I promise but until then thanks for showing some interest.

Ian
